2013 Tantalus Triple Trek Results

Aloha Athletes,

We were treated to a great day on the trails; they were wet, muddy, slippery--in spots, and we even had a passing shower or two just to keep the humidty up. All in all, perfect weather!

RD's Sue, Heather and Fish did an awesome job of organizing and setting up the race and manning the aid stations. Cheryl and her crew kept us hydrated mid course. At the finish, there was the usual spread of great food to add in with the fun conversation. Mahalo to all the volunteers.

We welcomed back Michael, Rosie and Wily from their successful 100 mile run in the N.W. Only Wily was crazy enough to go out and run today. Of course, the even more crazy part, he and several others (Randy) and I am not all sure who else, were headed to the airport so they can run the Kauai Marathon tomorrow. I feel like such a slacker!!! Others who did today's race are jumping on their bikes tomorrow for Dick Evans and quite a few are doing the Waikiki Roughwater on Monday.

Back to today's race. Men's winner was Jake Rankinen. Women's winner was Susie Stephen. Congratulations to both. Jake went flying by me down Hogsback as he was finishing the race and I was finishing my second lap like I was a Eucalyptus tree planted in the hillside. I also thought it was pretty cool that he volunteered to go back out and be one of the course sweeps.

I know there were quite a few first timers out there as well today and congratulations to them and everyone who made today a success.

2013 Tantalus Triple Trek Results

So, this race brings us to the end of the 2013 HURT Trail Series. This year marked some changes in how register for the Trail Series and I think overall it was successful and most importantly, people had a lot of fun out on the trails.

For many of us, our training will now switch over to focus on the Peacock race on October 19th and many of us see the Triple Trek as the start of our 2014 HURT 100 training. We will be posting weekly training that reflects the work needed to prepare for these two events. Even if you are not signed up for either of these races, feel free to join in on any of these runs and know that you can always do less mileage.

Aloha, Bob

TANTALUS TRIPLE TREK (TTT) Information

Race Day: (Saturday) August 31st, 2013 - 5:30 am Start.

Aloha Kakou,

Welcome to our 22nd Annual TTT.

OK, here’s where we get a little serious on the mileage (50km or 30 miles), after all, this race marks the official beginning of H.U.R.T. training. Each runner will complete three of the Trek 10 mile loops, coming back to the Nature Center aid station each loop.  For those of you not familiar with the race course, we suggest you study the attached map, perhaps you may want to print this out & carry a copy.

We are sorry but the race is officially sold out and there will be no same day sign-ups. If you would like to volunteer, please email the race directors with your choice of assignment.

We will have the usual race munchies which will cater to most palates with iced water & gatorate at both aid stations.  Usually race participants bring their own concoctions/electrolytes/special needs & you are highly encouraged to do so.

Race Directors will be there early to open the main gate at 4:30 am, and set-up by the Nature Center bathrooms.  Although already signed up you still need to check in with John and PJ to get your number inked on your leg.  There is no parking above the second gate, so please park on Makiki Heights Road below the Nature Center entrance.  We would appreciate it if our HURT runners didn’t fill-up the lower parking lot, so please kokua and try to park out on the road or even down the hill near the water tank and walk up.  Only race officials and volunteers can park up at the top.

It will be dark on the trail for the first half hour-  suggest you bring a small flashlight.

Aid stations will be at the Start/Finish & Tantalus Road crossing @ 7 mile point. The Tantalus aid station will only stay open until 1:30 pm (8 hours into the race), so plan accordingly.  Please carry enough fluids, especially for the later & hotter part of the afternoon.

Cutoff to leave the Start/Finish station for the third loop is 11:30 am, race time limit is 9 hours.  If you decide to drop, please inform a race director (Fish/Sue/Heather), so we won’t spend our evening out looking for you in the woods after the race.

The course will be marked with Orange ribbons, for the uphill section to the top of Tantalus and Green ribbons to bring you back down to the Nature Center.  This is a figure eight course, so orange & green ribbons will overlap in some areas of the course.  As always, BLUE is BAD! So do not go that direction. Bad sections & hazards will be clearly marked with Blue ribbons.

Looking forward to seeing everyone soon.

A HUI HOU!

Saturday Training: August 17 - Tantalus Training Run

Aloha Athletes!

This weekend we'll be doing the course preview for the sold out Tantalus Triple Trek 30 miler, the first official ultra distance of the trail series and my personal favorite. Sue, Heather, and Fish always put on a fantastic race and hopefully they are doing their rain dancing to make sure we have lots of mud to make things extra challenging. Race day is Saturday, Aug 31, 2013.

We'll be meeting at the Nature Center (near the bathrooms/picnic table) starting at 6am and going roughly 10 miles. Those that want to stay for longer mileage can do as many loops as their legs can handle.

Remember to leave your valuables at home, vehicle break ins are always possible at trail heads. Many choose to park down by the pumping station in the neighborhood, or feel free to park directly at the trailhead. If you have any questions please post them here.

Also, I hope everyone will volunteer for the Sunday trail work event posted by Bob. I did a workday with the Monoa Cliff group last year as part of my company volunteer program (read about it here) and they are a great bunch. I learned so much about the trails and got to answer all their questions about HURT.

See you Saturday!

Rosie

Trail Maintenance Opportunity: Sunday 8-18-13 9:00 a.m.

Aloha Athletes,

After a few quick e-mails this morning we have an opportunity to do some trail maintenance in preparation of the Tantalus Triple Trek. I was able to run a couple of loops up there this weekend and overall the course is in pretty good shape with the exception of the area on the Manoa Cliff Trail between the two pig gates.

So...if you would like to work with the people who are doing the native plant forest restoration project and help clear the trail, please let PJ know. We will coordinate with how many people are going to make sure we have enough tools. There are a lot of native plants along the trail so this will be selective clearing and trimming. The plan is to meet at the parking area where Moleka and Manoa Cliff trail cross the road at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday and hike the cliff trail up to the area. Alternatively you could run up there from another starting point.

Please let PJ know though so she can let the Project Coordinator know how many people to expect.

Her contact is three-five 1 dash fourteen 53. You know the e-mail right? hurtpals at a oh L dot com.

Mahalo for your help in advance. This will be a good relationship to foster since we use that section of the trail so extensively for both Trail Series races and also the HURT 100.

Aloha, Bob

2013 Maunawili Out and Back Results

Aloha Athletes,

My apologies for the late posting of these results, just getting back from a computer free couple of days on the North Shore (highly recommended!).

PJ sent me this short video to post as how could we possibly have a "Run with the Pigs" without a real pig.

Don't worry folks, the pig was a pet that Huddy arranged to be brought to the race.

Race Day was incredible. The weather was beautiful after an early, pre-race Hawaiian Sunshine blessing. There were a large number of runners who chose the early--6:00 a.m. start and they set off right on time.

The overall winner of the race was Susie Stephen. Congratulations to her and she also won by getting into the HURT 100 via the lottery on Sunday but I am getting ahead of myself. Thank you to everyone who came out and ran. It was fun seeing so many people out on the trail.

Marian and Neal again out did themselves as Race Directors. Marian puts out a spread of post-race food that would put many restaurant buffet's to shame. Thank you to them for keeping everyone fed and happy after some long hours on the trail. Of course there were a lot of other volunteers and I know many have been thanked already. These races wouldn't happen if it wasn't for everyone volunteering and jumping in to help. Thank you!

2013 Maunawili Out and Back Results

The next race in the HURT Trail Series is the final Trail Series race for 2013 and it is already sold out. This is the Tantalus Triple Trek on August 31.

The weekend of fun continued on Sunday with the 2014 HURT 100 lottery drawing party hosted by Jeff Huff. It was interesting for me to be trying to follow this via my phone as I imagine many others might have been as well. Congratulations to all those that were lucky and fortunate to get in. For those who didn't, please consider volunteering and seeing how else you can help out.

Aloha, Bob

Saturday Training: July 20 - Maunawili Taining Run / Run With the Pigs Information

Aloha Athletes:

This Saturday, the playground will be the Maunawili Trail, site of the upcoming Maunawili Out and Back (aka - Run With the Pigs).  There are many options for start times and locations - do what works for you.  There will be a group starting at the Waimanalo end of the trail at 5:30 am, doing the full 22 miles.  There will be a smal amount of water stashed at the Pali looukout, but if you plan to do the full distance, please take care of your own refueling needs.  Don't forget that it is a long and hot 11 miles each way and good hydration is imperative.

MAUNAWILI OUT AND BACK:

As of this posting, it looks as though there are 13 slots left for the race.  If you are interested in running this, don't delay.  Ultrasignup.com is handling the registration and there will be no race-day show-up/sign-up and bandits are strongly discouraged. Unofficial runners could jeopardize HURT’s ability to obtain permits for future use of the trail. If you see someone that is not officially entered, please share this information with them.

The Start/Finish:

Parking at the Nuuanu-Pali lookout is very limited; carpooling is HIGHLY recommended.  You must park off-site – along the roadway leading to the lookout parking lot.  You will not be able to park in the parking lot at the top - please abide by the Parking Czars’ instructions. DO NOT occupy a parking stall.

**If you are able to help out a visiting runner, Brett could sure use a ride to and from the race.  He is staying on Ala Moana Boulevard near the shopping center and can be reached via email at brettDOTkettleATgmailDOTcom.  Let's show our aussie friends some aloha!**

EARLY START OPTION – 6:00 a.m. for those who do not wish to compete for a prize:

  • You must notify Marian in advance (221-5171)
  • You must be at the lookout prior to the 6:00 am start to be body marked
  • You must be ready-to-go at 6:00 a.m. (there will be only one early start time)
  • You will not be eligible for any award

There are no restrooms at the start/finish.  Driving from town, there is a park with restrooms on the Pali Highway at the intersection with Paiwa Road.  Driving from Windward, there are restrooms at a park by Maunawili School at the corner of Uluhala and Ulupii.  Please refrain from using the foliage at the Pali lookout.

The COURSE:

The race is an out-and-back on a mostly single-track trail from the Pali lookout to Waimanalo (11 miles each way). The handoff point for relay teams is at the Waimanalo trailhead on Waikupanaha Street. I can provide driving instructions on race morning. Relay teams may hand off car keys at the turn-around aid station.

The RULES:

As with all of the H.U.R.T. runs, this event is all about fun. However, fun does not preclude safety and etiquette. As always, be careful and smart out there. Follow these simple rules and fun is virtually guaranteed:

  • The route will be marked with ORANGE ribbon about one mile in on both ends of the course.  Do not follow BLUE ribbons - they indicate the WRONG way.  BLUE = BAD. The middle will not have any markings.
  • Everyone must carry fluids (40 ounces minimum).  You will NOT be allowed to start without bottles and/or a hydration pack!  Be prepared for hot, humid conditions.
  • Stay on the trail and do not short-cut.
  • Whenever you stop for a view, to rest, or to yield, move off the trail so others can pass. Yield to horses, mountain-bikers, and take care when passing hikers. When overtaking someone, let them know you are approaching and will be passing on their left only when it is safe.
  • Pack It In - Pack It Out. Absolutely no littering.
  • Very Important! - If you need to drop out or leave the course, be sure to notify Marian (at the lookout) or Neal (at the turn-around). Do not leave without notifying someone in charge – we need to account for everyone who starts on the trail in the morning.
  • Be courteous and take care of each other.

AWARDS:

There will be awards given to the first five men, first five women, and first five relays to cross the finish line.

PAU HANA:
There will be plenty of food and drink at the finish.  Please plan to stay around to enjoy and swap stories.

NOTE: Nuuanu-Pali Lookout is a State park (http://www.hawaiistateparks.org):
Park rules are designed to help you and others have an enjoyable visit while protecting the cultural and natural resources. This is from the State Parks website:

ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES: The use or possession of alcoholic beverages is prohibited.

Please do not jeopardize the permit granted to HURT for this race. Mahalo!

2013 Kaena Point Firecracker Results

Aloha Athletes,

Rob sent me these results and it makes me a bit sad as we used to be race directors for this race. Unfortunately, we were unable to make it out today, however it looks like it was a great race as always.

Be sure to thank RD's Jeff and Julie for their outstanding job of putting on this race. I know they had a lot of other support as well.

2013 Kaena Point Firecracker Results

The next race in the HURT Trail Series is the highly anticipated Maunawili Out & Back 22 mile and Relay, other wise known as the "Run with the Pigs." Driving back from town late this afternoon we saw a pig running along the Pali close to the hairpin turn. He was getting in shape--you better be as well!

This race is coming up quick on August 3 and will be another HURT sellout. Signup via Ultrasignup.com.

Aloha, Bob

End Your Holiday Week with a BANG!!

H.U.R.T. Trail Series Kaena Point Firecracker 10-Mile Trail Race

Saturday July 6, 2013 @ 7:00a.m.

Muddy flag running shorts
On July 6th the H.U.R.T. Trail Series heads to end of the road and Kaena Point on the beautiful North Shore of Oahu.

Please register for this race at UltraSignUp here. Registration fee is $15. The final day to register will be on July 3, 2013 at midnight or when all 150 race slots have been filled (whichever comes first).

There will be Awards & a BBQ Potluck after the race, so please bring a dish to share, a beach chair, swimsuit - to relax and enjoy the post-race festivities!  Hotdogs, burgers, condiments, drinks, and some fruit will be provided.

This past February, Matt Leathers, Navy SEAL and HURT runner, was lost at sea off Kaena Point while participating in open water swim training. Matt ran in the 2012 and 2013 editions of the HURT 100 as well as numerous of the HURT trail series run. It was not uncommon for one to be running the Tantalus trails in the early morning and to suddenly encounter him stealthily running out there as well. As this is H.U.R.T.'s Independence Weekend event and due to its location, this run is dedicated not only to the memory of Matt but as well as to all the service members that we have had the distinct honor to have shared dirt and mud with.

Firecracker Race Fine Print: Kaena Point is a fast, flat, out-and-back course that parallels the ocean along jeep trails and an old sugar cane rail line. The course runs from the end of the pavement at Mokuleia past Dillingham Airfield and Camp Erdman, to where the pavement begins again on the Waianae coast side at Yokohama Bay. We will have an aid station with water set up at the turnaround, however, we will require ALL runners to carry adequate water (at least one 20 ounce bottle) during the run. It is hot out there and there is not much shade. Don't forget sun protection! There will be course marshals out on the course, follows their instructions or you will be disqualified from the race. They are there for your safety and to ensure course compliance so that we can continue to offer this race in the future!

Driving Instructions:  From the North Shore, follow the signs to Mokuleia or Waialua. Follow Farrington Highway past Dillingham Airfield and Camp Erdman. After that, you will come to Kaena Point State Park on your right.

Please contact one of the race directors below with any questions or IF INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING – we are still in need of fun-loving volunteers to help make our race an enjoyable experience for all the racers!

Aloha, Happy Trails, and Happy 4th of July!!

2013 Mango Madness Results

Aloha Athletes,

I am sure today's race was pure "Madness" in the best of all ways! Unfortunately, a Saturday morning appointment kept me from the run. However, I did get out for a bit of early MTB madness before duty called.

In any case, I will let others write up and hopefully send in some links to photos, however, I wanted to get the results posted. What is not shown in these results; Who ended up with multiple trips up Concrete Road??? Only those with sore calves will know!
